Utility Maintenance Mechanic

  • Full Time (40 Hours/week), entry level position, working on the construction, maintenance, and repair of the water distribution and wastewater collection systems. Involves heavy work and exposure to both indoor and outdoor conditions. Position is subject to periodic “On-Call” duties, as well as evening, weekend, and holiday “Call-Back” work in emergencies.  Ability to obtain a North Carolina commercial driver's license.  May require ability to successfully complete the training for grade C water distribution and/or grade I wastewater collection certification within 12 months of hiring, and successfully complete the test for same within 18 months.  This full-time position has an expected starting salary of $14.63/hr with an expected 5% increase after 6 months.

General Statement of Duties
Performs responsible unskilled and semi-skilled work in the installation, replacement, repair and preventive maintenance of water and sewer lines, pumping stations, and appurtenances.

Distinguishing Features of the Class
An employee in this class performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled work as a member of a crew engaged in the construction, installation and repair of water and sewer lines, pumping stations, and appurtenances. Work involves the operation of construction equipment in the installation, replacement and repair of water and sewer pipes to specific grade and depth, and back filling and compacting the site. Work also includes making taps to water and sewer mains, installing hydrants, meters, and valves, and making repairs to the water and sewer system. Other tasks include assisting in the operation of video camera equipment to identify system problems, performing preventive maintenance and repair to water and sewer pumping stations, and related tasks. Employees are subject to working in both inside and outside environments, in extreme hot and cold weather, and exposure to various hazards such as loud noises, vibration, moving mechanical parts, electrical current, chemicals, fumes, odors, dust, mist, gases, poor ventilation, and oils. Work is also subject to the final standards of OSHA on blood borne pathogens. Employees are also subject to on-call and call-back work. Work is performed under regular supervision, which is evaluated through observation, inspection for adherence to instructions, standard trade and safety practices.

Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Duties and Tasks
  • Read meters; installs and services meters and appurtenances
  • Installs water and sewer pipe; repairs and replaces sewer and water lines and related facilities
  • Assists in performing preventive maintenance and repair to sewer lift stations; follows regular inspection schedule; checks pumps and motors; packs and replaces seals; applies degreasing, odor control, and other chemicals
  • Assists with operating the sewer rodder and/or jet machine to unstop sewer lines
  • Cleans and inspects wastewater collection system
  • Participates in hydrant and valve exercising and maintenance programs; locates existing lines and valves to update maps or mark for other contractors
  • Operates dump trucks, jackhammers, tampers, pipe threading machines, tapping machines, trenchers, air compressors, and boring machines and other necessary equipment
  • Completes work order forms
  • Serves as on-call representative after normal working hours on a rotating schedule with other staff members

Physical Requirements
  • Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions
  • Must be able to perform very heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally; 50 pounds of force frequently; and 20 pounds constantly
  • Must possess the visual acuity to operate mobile equipment such as loaders and dump trucks in a safe manner to fit pipes and other parts, read gauges, and make written records
Desirable Education and Experience
Graduation from high school or equivalent and experience in construction-related utility work including heavy equipment operation experience; or experience in pump and motor mechanical maintenance and repair; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
