Organizational Unit Overview
The Division of Student Affairs actively supports the University's missions of education, research, and service by providing comprehensive programs and services to assist each student in developing intellectually, socially, morally, and culturally. The Division anticipates students' developmental needs throughout their collegiate experiences and promotes students' development by fostering a community of learning, which encourages individual student involvement and participation. The Division of Student Affairs provides a broad range of support services, activities, and programs that seek to: Assist students in developing respect and appreciation for individual differences, interpersonal civility, and human rights. Through collaboration, the division provides programs and services that are grounded in theory, assessment, and sound practice.

Within the Division of Student Affairs, the Office of the Dean of Students Office at East Carolina University is the campus resource for addressing and responding to student issues and concerns. Staff within the Dean of Students office often serve as a liaison between students, faculty, staff and administrators. The Dean of Students office assists students and family members in navigating their way through various campus procedures. Staff in the Dean of Students office often help to develop, articulate, disseminate and enforce East Carolina University's rules, regulations, and policies. The Dean of Students office works directly with students to: problem solve; assist in individual and group crisis management, and advocate for students, when appropriate. Students are encouraged to visit the Dean Students office to discuss ideas, personal issues, or general concerns about student life at East Carolina University. By communicating with other university departments and offices, the Dean of Students office is able to support the needs of students and their communities by identifying resources to respond to and fulfill those needs. With a commitment to teaching civic engagement, the Dean of Students office cultivates a caring environment that values personal and academic integrity, respect for all people, responsible citizenship, and holding students accountable for their behavior. In collaboration with partners throughout East Carolina University, the Dean of Students office staff are invested in serving students in a safe and healthy environment.





Job Duties
This is a unique and specialized position which blends the functions of non-clinical student consultation, program coordination of student referrals and intake, systems development for reporting and maintenance of student cases, and leadership in addressing factors which contribute to student attrition and improve student academic success. This position coordinates the university's process for addressing the needs of students who have crisis with academic, family, health, and other issues through providing referrals, follow-up services and, when necessary, withdrawal of the student from the university. The position serves as the primary communicator to academic deans and designees, health care and mental health providers, staff and parents relative to students requiring university withdrawal and/or in need of additional/other resources to succeed at East Carolina University; collects, reviews, coordinates and manages the student cases that come to the Dean of Students Office through the University Behavioral Concerns Team.


Essential Job Functions


  • Objectively assess and triage all incoming threat cases about actual or potential incidents of violence using current accepted processes and best practices; Provide threat assessment response and intervention to potentially violent situations; Review Incident Reports to determine cases that will be tracked by the UBCT; Interview, investigate, and document non-criminal threat cases; Monitor and track individual cases and their progress to ensure compliance with recommendations and include an on-going assessment and address new or emerging concerns as they become more evident; Partner with the Office of General Counsel, the Center for Counseling and Student Development, the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities, the ECU Police, and other key stakeholders to ensure comprehensive case management is in place; Partner with external community agencies and law enforcement, as appropriate; Coordinate the development of threat assessment and violence prevention procedures, protocols, and resources; Develop and implement safety plans for identified victims or potential victims of violence; Provide victim/witness assistance to reporting victims and concerned community members; Refer victims to appropriate ECU resources and provide ongoing victim assistance; Provide database management to ensure data integrity; Serve as the department's functional expert for the threat case management system; Follow protocols regarding the handling of confidential and highly sensitive law enforcement data and information. (60%)

  • Administrative Responsibilities - Supervise the Assistant Dean of Students Serve on the Dean of Students Leadership Team Serve as the 'dean on-call' in a 24-hour emergency on-call rotation Collect comprehensive, fact-based information on reported students, faculty and staff that may represent a threat to campus safety Refer students, faculty and staff who appear to create a safety concern to the campus to the university's CARE Team and/or the University Behavioral Concerns Team (UBCT) and follows up on the committee's recommendations Provide information and refer students to the appropriate resources (i.e., Student Affairs officials, victim advocate services, Student Health Services, Center for Counseling and Student Development, Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities) Ensure student emergencies are properly directed to the appropriate department or outside agency Serve on Student Affairs Divisional and East Carolina University committees, as requested Performs other duties as assigned. (40%)






Minimum Education/Experience
Master's degree in the area of social work, behavioral health, criminal justice or any other related degree and 5 years of post-graduate experience in higher education.

Demonstrated organizational and administrative skills, including interpersonal, written, and verbal communication.

Experience building strong teams and positive and effective relationships across campus or communities.

Knowledge of legal issues in higher education.

Demonstrated Ability to multi-task and work independently.







License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
Doctorate degree in the area of social work, behavioral health, criminal justice or any other related degree.

Knowledge of academic rules and regulations.

Significant experience with crisis and threat management, and experience interacting with the public, parents, students, faculty, and staff.

Understanding of and commitment to diversity.
