Position Overview

The Distribution Center Director is responsible for directing the daily activities of the DC including labor scheduling, supervision, and accurate utilization of space, equipment and manpower. Key responsibilities include: staffing, training, operations, inventory management, maintenance of the facility and equipment, implementation of safety, security, housekeeping and sanitation programs, budgeting, and customer service.

The Distribution Center Director serves as an interface and coordinator among the DC and manufacturing operations, customer service (Hubbell Businesses), IT, Human Resources, and Transportation. The DC Manager is accountable for the safe, efficient and economical operation of the facility and equipment.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • OPERATIONS: Develop and direct programs to ensure the efficient and cost-effective operation and utilization of the facility. Plan and schedule all distribution center services including receiving, storing, shipping, handling returned/damaged goods, and if applicable assembly of finished goods, maintenance, and administrative activities to ensure customer requirements are met in an efficient manner. Plan long-range labor needs based on sales forecasts and input from Division management. Make recommendations to senior management on programs to improve operations. Passion for continuous improvement with experience in change management.
  • COMMUNICATIONS: Conduct or attend all employee meetings. Interact with the Director of Distribution, Division Managers and facility managers and supervisors to establish goals and objectives. Collaborate with Finance, Human Resources, Transportation and Information Systems, Department Managers, Supervisors and all employees.
  • MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEM: Ensure the creation of the necessary warehouse information systems to meet company objectives and facilitate the efficient operations of the DC and the support functions of Finance, Human Resources and Transportation. Ensure that the necessary computer software and hardware are purchased and functional as the need arises. Remain knowledgeable regarding changes in hardware and software technology.
  • LABOR MANAGEMENT: Direct the operations of the DC supervisory personnel to achieve prescribed objectives. In collaboration with Human Resources, develop and maintain a productive work team by crafting programs for hiring, training and professional development. Apply sound communications and motivational techniques in supervising, counseling and disciplining subordinates. Implement an appropriate performance evaluation system for recommending promotions, wage increases and terminations. Experience in developing and managing highly productive teams and individuals.
  • EQUIPMENT: Develop procedures to ensure the efficient operation and utilization of all DC equipment. Supervise the safety and working condition of all equipment and lead all aspects of the adjustments and/or repairs as necessary. Adjust the quantity and type of equipment to meet business needs and minimize costs. Develop and implement a program of equipment maintenance.
Skills and Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Supply Chain, Manufacturing, Engineering or related field required
  • Computer skills including: Intermediate skills in MS Excel 2010 or newer version, such as crafting graphs and charts. Intermediate skills in MS Word 2010 or newer version, such as using tables, columns and breaks, graphics, fields, headers and footers, working with margins, page orientation, and spelling/grammar. Intermediate skills in MS PowerPoint 2010 or newer version such as working with templates, using multimedia objects and custom animations, adding interactions, and publishing completed presentations.
  • Ideal candidate will have two or more years of user experience in SAP.
  • Solid understanding of the distribution industry including industrial equipment operation, picking, packing, and receiving put-away methodologies.
  • Strong interpersonal skills are vital.
  • Project management or material handling experience required.
  • Experience with Lean methodologies a plus.
