Organizational Unit Overview
The Division of Health Sciences is the largest and most complex division within the University, employing more than 900 EHRA employees and 1,700 SHRA employees. The Division is composed of numerous Centers, Institutes, and agencies such as East Carolina Heart Institute and Eastern Area Health Education Center, the Colleges of Allied Health Sciences, Nursing, the Brody School of Medicine, the School of Dental Medicine, and the Laupus Health Science Library. In addition to the Academic and Administrative responsibilities of the division, the four professional schools provide clinical services throughout eastern North Carolina in a variety of settings and venues.
The School of Dental Medicine is composed of ten administrative offices and four academic departments. The Administrative units include the Offices of the Dean, Vice Dean, Associate Dean for Student Affairs, Associate Dean for Research, Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs, Associate Dean for Extramural Clinical Practices, Assistant Dean for Dental Education and Informatics, Assistant Dean for Educational Support and Faculty Development, Assistant Dean for Academic Success and the Assistant Dean for Business Operations and Financial Affairs. The four academic departments are Surgical Sciences, Pediatric Dentistry, Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, General Dentistry and Foundational Sciences.
Included in the mission of the School of Dental Medicine is to educate dental care providers (both dental students and dental residents) and to address the oral health care needs of the underserved population of North Carolina. The School of Dental Medicine meets these missions by operating dental clinics that provide both educational experiences for the dental students and residents and provides dental care to the residents of North Carolina. These clinics occur in both Ross Hall in Greenville, North Carolina, as well as Community Service Learning Centers located throughout North Carolina. In order to operate these clinics, appropriate dental auxiliaries and clinical staff are needed.
Job Duties
The East Carolina University School of Dental Medicine pediatric dentist faculty member serves in and supports the Division of Pediatric Dentistry in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry, Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics. The pediatric dentist reports to the Division Director. The Division of Pediatric Dentistry is responsible for the education of dental students in the area of pediatric dentistry and for the training of the residents in the pediatric dentistry and general dentistry residency programs. This is a fixed term or tenure track position at the title/rank of Assistant Professor or higher.
Specific duties include:
- Supporting the didactic and clinical activities within the Division of Pediatric Dentistry.
- Conducting scholarly activities to support promotion and/or granting of tenure.
- Working with Division faculty and others to develop and deliver state-of-the-art continuing education programs in the area of pediatric dentistry on a regional, statewide and, if possible, national-wide basis.
- Actively participating in the school's faculty practice plan.
- Assisting in school and pediatric program accreditation activities.
- Assisting in Division quality assurance and improvement and compliance efforts.
- Seeking to serve on committees and boards for state/federal government agencies, professional societies and within the school.
- Responding to assignments from Chair of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry, Orthodonticsand Dentofacial Orthopedics and the Division Director essential to the department, division and school operations.
- Commitment to the Mission and Vision of the School of Dental Medicine including both a community- based and a generalist model of dental education
- Commitment to evidence-based teaching and practice.
- Willingness to apply academic experiences of contemporary dental education and traditional educational values to the Community Services Learning Center model.
- Performing other duties and assuming additional responsibilities as assigned by the Department Chair and the Dean.
Minimum Education/Experience
Required Qualifications:
DDS or DMD (or equivalent) from an appropriately accredited institution with expertise in dental education.
- Certification of completion of an ADA Commission on Dental Accreditation accredited Pediatric Dentistry residency or equivalent training in a Canadian program.
- Possession of, or eligibility for, a teaching or regular dental licensure in North Carolina (a North Carolina dental license must be secured by the time of employment).
- Broad knowledge of issues in dental education.
License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation
- Certification of completion of an ADA Commission on Dental Accreditation accredited Pediatric Dentistry residency or equivalent training in a Canadian program.
- Possession of, or eligibility for, a teaching or regular dental licensure in North Carolina (a North Carolina dental license must be secured by the time of employment).
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
Preferred Qualifications:
- Clinical experience in dental education at the institutional level, working in development, implementation, evaluation and monitoring of departmental programs leading to the dental degree.
- Experience with pediatric dental resident education.
- Experience with advanced forms of pediatric sedation.
PALS certification.
- Experience with digital record keeping, imaging, and/or grading.
